How do candy cane coral grow

I'm really going to have to pay more attention to my merletti. It seems as though I've never noticed a small new head--I just look at it and boom!

It's done especially well since I moved it to the back of the tank where it's practically in the shadow of the in-tank soap-dish "fuge. So heres the bubble and hammers I was talking about. Its already night and the LEDs are lit so these have flash. The bubble picture turned out really interesting. The hammer isn't a great pic but shows the distinct heads nicely. So who else has LPS multiplying? I've got a small echino frag that has multiple mouths showing up now too. The mouths on that particular piece appear to have formed at the edges while the original mouth of the frag is basically dead center.

Its on a Y-shaped rock and was glued down as a loose piece. Its able to hang a bit before it hits the rock so it has some interesting "drooping" growth. I think it looks really neat. I've got the normal flat growth on one side and the drooping on the other. Hasn't made much difference in reproduction, as I've got new mouths in both sections of growth. I just took a pic of my FS and the small "baby" head that is growing off the bottom part of the flesh. I had to pick it up so the heads retracted, and to get the baby into a good position to take the picture.

Does anyone know how the really large lps xlps? Open brains, Scolymia , Cynarina , Fungia , etc.? We don't see many of these here except for the brains --probably because they're not exactly nano spp. But they fascinate me I've been looking at some fungiids. Have to move some rock around to make it work, but you're right they're not nano-friendly.

Good question on how they reproduce. New update. I just took this picture tonight. You can see the first head, but there is also a second "bump" with some small tentacles that do not show up on the photo they retracted because I picked up the piece to get a better angle for the pic. Recommended Posts. Posted July 14, edited. Two days ago I was looking at my new single-head candy cane frag, and noticed some tentacles sticking out from the side of the column: I was able to get a closer shot: I suppose it's too much to hope for that these might be new heads sprouting already? This is the best I could do--it may show that the tentacles are indeed emerging from a bend in the column that looks like a joint: --Diane Edited August 20, by c est ma.

Share this post Link to post. Posted July 14, The fact that it's brown though, makes me think it's something else. That's kinda what I thought, both of you. I had one huge colony until it ended up broken into five different smaller colonies during a tank up grade. I don't think any of us can expect the same results in different tanks. Seven to in 18 months?! What's in your water?

The coral equivalent of HGH?! My calcium has been a bit low ppm and so I just bought Seachem Reef Complete to up it to the ppm range--perhaps that will encourage some growth. The only thing I add to my water is B-Ionic two part at about half the dose they recommend. I bought a 4 head frag in September Under T5s until last month. Now HQI.

All the heads have spread and puffed up a bunch. I feed them mysis on occassion. Several new mouths have formed, but no splitting or additional heads. It seems very health and responsive, but I've had no new concrete evidence of growth. Discouraging to say the least. One thing that I think we might be missing here is the color of the corals we are talking about. I do have another colony of them that have not split nealy as fast as the ones that have turned into over heads in the 18 months.

The ones that done so well are whitish green in color, I also have a colony of brownish red with green centers that have only gone from 4 heads to maybe 20 heads in about two years. I don't know if it has to do with the color of them or if it could have to do with tank placement. They were in the same general area of the tank but could have had a little different flow or maybe the light just wasn't exactly the same on them.

No they were not the same color in any way. There are lots of different colored ones. I don't know if the lighter color grew faster due to color or due to something slightly different about tank location. Glad to hear yours seem to be happier. I noticed a week or two ago that both heads formed additional mouths.

They're just now starting to pinch into the figure eight. I figure I have at least another month before the new heads separate. Assuming this continues, mine will double approximately every months. Like everyone else, mine took forever to get happy. Now that it's happy, it's possible that doubling could occur as fast as every 3 months. We'll see. If I was supposed to, well, sorry about that.

One of my candy canes has a polyp that has been in the process of splitting for about a month now. Candy canes can take a while to start the budding process but once they do they will start to bust out. Make sure they have the right light and the make sure u leave them sitting still. I put mine on the bottom of the tank in the sand and havent touched them since. Now almost all of the polyps have split. Maybe thats my problem My light is a watt mh with 2 24 watt actinics and my tank is a 29 gallon.

The might be a little overkill but if you raise it a little it shouldnt be a problem. If the bulb is old it will cause algae blooms as well. GlassMunky said:. Click to expand
