The paper is a weight standard lining paper and has been hung over a skimmed wall which was treated with a diluted solution of wallpaper paste.
The wall was skimmed round 3 months ago, the paper hung 48 hours ago. Why am I getting these bubbles? Are they bubbles or do they look like elongated creases? After 48 hours the paper should be well dry and I cant think of anything else that will cause the poblem.. The solution Next time Your second point. Am I right is assuming that an existing colour is showing through the paper, or are they bumps that are showing? This isn't clear. An existing colour will cover if given the proper number of coats.
Bumps will need flushed away. Some photos may help here. The 'decorator' is not letting the paper relax before putting it on the wall. Lining Walls is a very simple job and if he can't do that I'm not sure he is much of a decorator. There may well be issues with paint peeling off underneath the lining paper but that doesn't result in multiple air bubbles, that results in split seams or large detached areas.
On the issue of time that really depends on how large the rooms are and if any prep work is being carried out before lining. Are you annoyed at the time taken because it means you can't use the rooms for longer or because you are paying him by the day?
This is where your problems start. Your saying you can see the existing old paint and wall, so im thinking of a moon like finish on the new paper. This equates to not enough filling being done prior to putting the paper up. You may want to look at getting a higher grade paper as well as actually getting your filling done, this way covering both bases.
The thickest on the market at the moment is , what grade is your dec using? The bubbles your getting sound like the paint underneath is lifting off the wall due to the weight of the lining paper,so not an actual air bubble as such but bad prep again. When applying size to walls any loose paint generally bubbles up here if the prep hasnt been done correctly.
But as another poster has said sometimes things happen and your standing there scratching your head wondering how the hell that has happened and how did you miss it. TBH the prep work sounds a bit non existent from your description of works! You will also find the bubbles that have gone back will raise their heads again as soon as you paint the walls. I would imagine you will have quite a few that dont go back and will need to be cut out or a syringe put into them to release paste and then smoothed down.
Re walls are fairly new,12 year old house. So decorater turned up and just started papering. I expected a few lumps and bumps here and there of old screwholes that wasnt perfectly rubbed down. So where do i go from here decoraters coming back to look , he says he was worried also and asked if bubbles disapeared. What do i ask him to do? No not paid by the hour he quoted 2 days for job we agreed a price. My last decorater wallpapered the room in less than a day, and had to match design , on 2 different types , i had it half plain half patterned walls.
I bought some paint about 3 months ago to paint directly onto the walls but decided to line them to get rid of the lumps and bumps. Anyway my wall papering must have gone slightly bad as when i painted i found air pockets and the paper bubbled up. Is it due to the paint type emulsion or just bad papering? Any tips to get round this? Happened to me with the textured anaglypta sic type paper. Usually once it's dried out properly the bubbles have disappeared again.
If you stuck with bubbles after its all dried out your only option would be to split them open with a sharp knife and re-paste them, although the wall papering experts may have some tricks they could share for a better way to do it.
